A Marathi birth certificate should be translated as a complete record, with its entries, registration details and readable stamps accounted for. Provide the whole scan and passport spellings for reference. The certification format depends on the authority receiving the English translation.
The difficult part is often not the printed heading. It is an abbreviated name, an old handwritten entry, a faint stamp or a difference between the certificate and the passport. Resolving these points before translation helps keep the final document faithful to the source.
Which details deserve a careful check?
- The child’s name and the parents’ names.
- Date and place of birth.
- Registration number and registration date.
- Issuing authority and the date of issue.
- Stamps, signatures, handwritten additions and reverse-side text.
The birth date, registration date and issue date can be different. They should retain their distinct labels in English. Do not replace one with another simply because a form asks for a single date.
How should passport spellings be used?
Marathi names can have more than one plausible English transliteration. Sharing the passport spelling helps the translator choose a consistent rendering where it accurately represents the source. It does not authorise adding a missing surname, changing a parent’s name or concealing a discrepancy.
Illustrative example, not a client record: a source contains a parent’s initial, while the passport spells out the full name. The translator should not silently expand that initial as though the full name appeared on the certificate. Flag the difference and discuss whether a note or a separate supporting document is appropriate.
What if handwriting or a stamp is unclear?
Send a high-resolution colour scan or a new photograph taken straight above the page, with even light and no glare. Include the page edges. If the writing remains unreadable, it should be identified as such rather than guessed. Where a missing detail matters to the application, a clearer or reissued record may be needed.
A translation describes the source supplied. It cannot authenticate a seal or repair a defective original document.
Does an English heading remove the need for translation?
Not necessarily. A bilingual form may still contain Marathi entries or endorsements. Have the complete record checked against the receiving authority’s language requirements. Conversely, if the issuing authority has provided a complete English version, ask whether any translation is needed before ordering one.
Which certification should accompany it?
Identify whether the document is going to USCIS, IRCC, a UK visa application, a university or another body. Read the relevant instructions instead of assuming that an agency certificate, notarisation and sworn translation are interchangeable.
